About.

Welcome to the Derivativ blog. I started Derivativ to document and share my experience with the fast-changing world of Generative AI.

After diving deep into Gen AI during my time at AWS, I found the vast majority of media coverage of the space wasn’t reflective of what I was seeing on the ground. The ferocity and speed of innovation in the open-source AI community— the builders creating new generative models, tools, and applications— is unlike anything I’ve seen in my career in tech.

While much of this emerging innovation never makes the current technology headlines, I believe it is the primordial soup from which massive disruption and the next generation of tech leaders will emerge. I want Derivativ to be a window into what’s happening in this exciting new realm.

People often ask me, “what’s the best way to get started learning more about Gen AI?” My response is that the learning curve in Generative AI is more like a tide. Innovations surge in like fast-moving waves, and just as quickly they recede and are replaced by another wave. So, the best way to get started is to pick a wave, hop on, and hang tight until the next one!
